This cave on the east coast of Rathlin has a rather unassuming name. The name 'Brackens Cave' might simply refer to the plants growing within. However, there is a more interesting possibility. The cave is also referred to as Uamh Bhreacain (Cave of Breccain). Breccain was believed to be a grandson of Niall of the Nine Hostages and it is said that he was lost at sea in a storm and tidal whirlpool somewhere between Ireland and Scotland. There is a tidal whirlpool named the 'Corryvreckan' that is generated in the sea near the Scottish Island of Jura. This is an anglicised version of Coire Bhreacain (Cauldron of Breccain). Similar tidal conditions are also generated around Rathlin Island so perhaps it is possible that Breccain met his end on these shores rather than in Scotland. Indeed it is said in legend that Breccain's body was buried in this cave.
