The Camel is a volcanic feature that can be seen in bay of Portnaboe to the west of the Giant's Causeway. It is a fine example of a basalt whin dyke. During the time of volcanic activity this would have been a long fissue of hot lava which subsequently solidified. The softer rock around it was later eroded away to leave this harder dyke of rock sitting prominantly in the bay. There are many example of basalt dykes around the Causeway Headlands. However, this is one of the easiest to access and appreciate at close quarters. Near the Camel is a small harbour where the boatmen of Portnaboe would have taken holidaymakers to visit the great caves to the west including Portcoon and Dunkerry. and then the
