The Bendoo Plug
Ballintoy, County Antrim

All photos © Andy McInroy

The Bendoo Plug is a dolerite mass which was formed when hot magma spilled out from under the earth's crust, rather like a mini volcano. When the magma cooled and hardened it became this dark, domed plug which you can see on the right hand side of this photograph. It has a diameter of roughly 350m, noticeably higher than the land around it due to the hard nature of this rock. Sheep Island and then Rathlin Island can be seen in the distance.
