Dun Ruadh Megalithic Cairn

This a photograph of the megalithic burial cairn of Dun Ruadh which is located behind a farmhouse in the townland of Crouck in County Tyrone. The impressive ring cairn has a stone circle set within it. Cairns like this would probably have been built in the Bronze age between 2000 and 1200BC. The tree within the cairn is obviously much more recent. Perhaps it has been planted here or perhaps luck has placed it right in the centre of the circle. Hawthorns like this growing alone in the fields of Ireland are steeped in folklore and some are said to be the home of the fairy people. This one, growing in the centre of an ancient burial cairn, is very unusual.
